Icotherm – reassuringly compliant, so let them know about it
Building Control Inspectors Ball & Berry certify Icotherm roofs, announces Anne-Marie Busch, Marketing Manager. This is not a decision that was made lightly she emphasises, but we took it with our customers in mind.
We need to work with an organisation that is prepared to go the extra step to ensure our roofs are appropriately checked when installed, and Ball&Berry can provide just that.
The aim of certifying a roof system for building control compliancy is a two-fold solution:
• The systems house wants to ensure their roof is up to the task, whilst providing you, the installer, with a solution that will make your work easier when getting your installation building control approved.
• The other important role of the compliancy certification and having a roof registered is to give the homeowner the reassurance that their roof is a genuine product. Ball & Berry will do this for us; as part of the application process they will check the original Icotherm paperwork and register the roof reference, allowing us to double check it is indeed a roof we have manufactured.
This protects our customers against competitors claiming to use a high specification roof like Icotherm’s when in fact they are not. It also protects Icotherm’s product and brand by ensuring only genuine products are sold under our name.

Everything you need to know when selecting a solid roof.
There are a lot of lightweight tiled roof iterations out there, and beyond selecting a product for price there are several points that you should question when you are selecting the system you want to sit under.
Will my roof be prone to condensation?
Definitely not something you want to be dealing with!
So, you may have heard the terms dew point and interstitial condensation… but never really looked into what they mean. Now is as good a time as any….!
If there is one thing that cannot be avoided – unless you live on Mars, because there is no atmosphere out there – is that our air contains moisture. In the UK, average relative humidity (moisture) levels can be as high as 80%.
Dew is created when the air cools and moisture forms on surfaces as it can no longer hold onto that water.
Not much of a problem on the outside of windows, or even on roof tiles. More of a problem when this happens on the inside of the roof and creates interstitial condensation.
Interstitial condensation is formed when cool moist air (read: UK air) gets into the fabric of the roof and hits warmer air, or components that are warmer. If the temperature change is significant enough the dew point will be reached and form condensation that can eventually turn to mould and spread.
To make sure your selected solid roof will not create interstitial condensation
– Check that there is a suitable ventilation cavity to take out the moist air out of the roof, situated above the insulation and on the cool side of the roof
– Make sure the insulation supplied is sufficient to minimise any cold bridging and stop warm air from reaching the external rafter.
– If the system uses a cold bridging aluminium frame (unlike Icotherm’s roof): ask if that metal is suitably clad in non-conductive material to limit the possibility of condensation
– Check that the design specification includes vapour control barriers on the room side
– Check that the roof has successfully been through a CRA (Condensation Risk Analysis)
Doesn’t ventilation just mean draught?
A correctly ventilated solid roof will allow air circulation where it matters the most: well away from the room it sits on top of, right under the tiles and above the insulation. Check that the ventilation routes and vents on your Icotherm roof are not blocked. It will invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
Why clad-overs should be avoided – in our opinion
You might be considering a clad over as a low budget option; it has its place if:
– You are not looking to add value to the property or need Building Control approval.
– You are not looking for the best performing roof or the prettiest finish
– The insulated roof does not exceed the original weight it was designed for; roofs collapse are a thing.
So, the Icotherm roof system
The Icotherm roof system uses a solid roof construction, with 150mm EPS fully recyclable, rigid insulation, and is fully ventilated. It has been CRA checked and is JHAI certified (pre-approved for building control purposes)
Supplied in ready to “slide on” pods, which can be made to suit hard to access installation sites, such as having to go through the house (ie small pods), the Icoroof allows your prefereed installer to replace / install your roof quickly and efficiently.

Pitch Perfect: The installers’ preferred solid roof
As a four-year old company that started from a tiny unit in Bolton, Icotherm Roof Systems has moved up in leaps and bounds.
Thousands of roofs have been manufactured, the work force has grown several fold, and in March the business moved to larger premises in Blackburn, increasing capacity and growth capabilities.
Dave Jackson, the man behind the Icotherm solid roof, is just as passionate (some might say more) about the product as he was 4 years ago. “We still have so much to achieve. I firmly believe that we are offering the best product on the market today. We have spent a lot of time developing and improving the core product, the way we build the insulated pods, how they work together, and the ease and speed of installation. More importantly we have never compromised on performance; we want it to be the best product out there.…. and we believe we are the installers’ preferred solid roof”
And for good reasons: JHAI Approved, with standard U-values at 0.18 – (but can be as low as 0.12 -especially suitable for the Scottish region); waterproof in under 3 hours from the start of roof installation (especially suitable for… all UK regions), with an overall design that ensures a smooth installation.
Icotherm has now reached its next growth stage. The demand for solid roof solutions, either as a replacement option, of for new single storey extensions and garages, is going to carry on growing. And clearly the company’s potential is far from fulfilled, as the product engineers are working on developing new product lines. We don’t want to be the first to market, but we are definitely aiming to be the best.
Dave Jackson adds: “A few months ago we realised that in order to successfully take the company into a solid growth spurt we would need to change our approach. We have brought in a new team member with the experience to help us become the solid roof system company of reference”
A French perspective
And this has led to the appointment of Icotherm’s new Marketing Manager, Anne-Marie Busch.
Having spent 5 years with K2 Conservatories, between 2010 and 2015, Anne-Marie drove the revival of the K2 brands and launched the orangery solutions range.
“This was my first time in the industry”, comments Anne-Marie. I had a blank slate back then; we needed to rebuild the brand and renew interest in the company, at a time where new installations had been dropping drastically.
“ I am really excited about what we can achieve with Icotherm Roof Systems. I will be setting up the marketing function from the ground up and be part of a management team working to turn Icotherm into a national brand. We want to set the standards for service, product quality, innovation, value, and of course be the timber framed solid roof system of reference
Pitching for 2019
In order to achieve this Icotherm is going to make a lot of changes in the way it supports its customers in 2019. Selecting a solid roof replacement is no small decision for the homeowner. The market demands more from its suppliers. Homeowners are looking for quality, performance and long lasting installations, and we want to support our customers achieve that by presenting and selling our products , whether it is in the showroom or in the front room.
Exciting times are ahead. We will be offering a new lifestyle brochure, marketing support material and much more.

At the Build Show, installers and home improvement companies learned how easy it is to add solid roof conservatories to their range with Icotherm Roof Systems. Featuring on the PiGS Pavilion in the Doors, Windows & Glass Show, Icotherm used the opportunity to showcase its timber solid-roof technology to visitors.
Dave Jackson, Director at Icotherm Roof Systems explains: “The Icotherm roof was specially designed to make it easy for installers to add it to their range. It can be fitted using the tools you’d find in any installer’s toolbox and clever innovations make it fast to fit on site, so home improvement companies can fit in more jobs.”
Icotherm Solid Roofs use SIPS-style ‘pods’, which are 70 percent assembled in the factory, leaving less to fit on site. There are very few components and insulation is pre-cut so that roofs can be made watertight in as little as 2 hours. A special drainage mat ensures there is a sufficient air gap between the roof and the tiles without the need of battens. Plus, roofs are easy to adjust on site during the install.
Fully insulated and fully-ventilated, Icotherm Roof Systems include the Icotherm Solid Roof and the newly-launched IcoSpan Flat Roof that’s perfect for orangeries and glazed extensions.
Dave adds: “Being a part of the Build Show has really helped to get our product in front of a wider range of home improvement companies who are looking for innovative products to add to their offering.”
The PiGS Pavilion organised by Balls2 Marketing, was part of the Build Show at UK Construction Week at the NEC.
Icotherm Roof Systems has launched a new flat roof system for orangeries – IcoSpan. Using the same roof technology as Icotherm Solid Roof, IcoSpan offers installers the great benefits of fast and easy fitting, great thermal performance and impressive aesthetics.
The flat roof system is available in two options: ‘Naked’ or ‘Ready to Dress’ dependant on installer preferences.
Dave Jackson, Director at Icotherm said: “More of our customers have been asking us about flat roofs, because they are in high demand from homeowners wanting to build orangery style extensions. That’s why we developed IcoSpan.
“We have replicated our proven timber-framed solid roof technology to create a flat roof system that, teamed with a glass roof lantern creates an impressive light-filled space for any home.
“What’s great for installers is that the flat roof system is just as quick and easy to install as our pitched solid roof. It’s created with SIPs style pods for a fast fit. Plus, installers have the choice of buying a naked roof, so they can buy and apply their own EDPM or GRP or a ready-to-dress kit which is a roof supplied complete with EDPM ready to apply.”
The new IcoSpan flat roof system achieves U-Values of just 0.17 and is approved by JHAI for Building Regulations, so installers can easily get building certificates. Fitters can also get PVCu or thermally broken aluminium, glazed roof lanterns from Icotherm, so they can get the full orangery roof kit in one place, on one invoice and one delivery.
Craig Robinson, Account Manager at Keswick Superglaze said: “At Keswick Superglaze, we aim to make choosing the right conservatory, orangery, double glazed replacement windows, doors or roofline products an absolute pleasure, but we are only as good as our suppliers.
“When we work with customers, it is extremely important that they receive the very best service and that means working with the very best suppliers. When a customer comes to us, wanting a first-class solid roof installation, our thoughts turn to Icotherm – we know we’re going to get a great product and that enhances the service we give to our clients.”
Keswick Superglaze is a family-run business that has been installing windows, doors and conservatories in homes across Cumbria for more than 30 years.
Craig continues: “We source all our products from sustainable companies, which use the best quality materials, and Icotherm fits into that category. The technical support is superb, staff at Icotherm are easy to deal with and the products are delivered quickly. We’ve got a good relationship with the team – long may it last.”
Director at Icotherm, Dave Jackson adds: “We love working with like-minded companies like Keswick Superglaze, who want to offer the very best to their customers. They have worked on some fantastic projects using Icotherm Solid Roofs and I’m looking forward to working closely with them as we both continue to grow.”
Icotherm Roof Systems will be at The Build Show as part of the Product Showcase on the PIGS Pavilion, organised by Balls2 Marketing.
The new Doors, Windows & Glass Show has been added to The Build Show, part of UK Construction Week, after feedback from last year’s exhibition saw massive demand from visitors to see more windows, doors, roofs and glazing systems. The PIGS Pavilion has been created to showcase the latest product innovation in the glazing industry supply chain, which includes Icotherm Roof Systems.
Jenny Jackson, Managing Director at Icotherm Roof Systems says: “We are really pleased to be a part of The Build Show this year. It’s such a big show, covering the entire construction industry, so it’s a brilliant opportunity to get our roof technology in front of a wider construction audience.
“Exhibiting as part of the PIGS Product Pavilion gives us the chance to be seen by both visitors and glazing industry players who are invited to the PIGS Pavilion to catch-up with industry friends or get advice on how to make the most of the show.”
Icotherm Solid Roof is the fully insulated, fully ventilated, lightweight, timber-framed solid conservatory roof system that’s perfect for refurbishing conservatories. It’s also a great choice for creating new-build solid-roof conservatories.
Visitors can find Icotherm Roof Systems and get a look at its innovative solid-roof technology on Stand B515 in Hall 10 at The NEC between Tuesday 9 October and Thursday 11 October 2018.
Timber-framed solid roof experts, Icotherm Roof Systems has invested more than £45,000 in new software that means customers can get a solid roof quote in just 2 hours. Bringing the highest levels of customer support to the solid roof sector is top priority for Icotherm, who recently moved operations to a 15,600 sq. ft. facility in Blackburn.
Dave Jackson, Director at Icotherm says: “Icotherm roofs are delivered fast and they’re fast to fit, so it made sense to make quotes fast too. With our new technology, our sales support to the solid roof team in the office can design and quote for a solid conservatory roof in just 2 hours.
“In today’s world, where everything is instant, homeowners often make fast decisions. Our 2 hour quote service means that when they ask an Icotherm installer for a price on a new conservatory or refurb, they get an answer back the same day.”
The new software has been specially designed for the Icotherm Roof Systems and creates a bespoke-designed roof plan, complete with pricing.
Icotherm is the fully-ventilated, fully-insulated timber framed conservatory roof system that can be watertight in as little as 2 hours.
